  This activity is intended for medical oncologists, hematology-oncology fellows and other healthcare providers involved in the treatment of breast cancer.
  
  LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Recognize the clinical and biological factors (eg, high tumor grade, visceral/liver metastases, negative PgR status) that place patients with hormone receptor (HR)-positive, HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer (mBC) at high risk for disease progression.
  • Discern the mechanism by which the cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) pathway contributes to breast cancer proliferation and growth, and consider the clinical and research implications for the management of HR-positive metastatic disease.
  • Appraise published efficacy and safety data from randomized clinical trials evaluating the use of CDK4/6 inhibitors in patients with HR-positive mBC in order to appropriately understand the risks, benefits and optimal clinical use of these agents.
  • Implement a clinical plan for the treatment of newly diagnosed HR-positive mBC, considering the patient’s age, tumor grade, ER/PgR status, site(s) of metastases, prior treatments received and preexisting medical conditions.
  • Develop preventive and emergent strategies to reduce or ameliorate the unique side effects associated with the various approved CDK4/6 inhibitors.
