CE Information and Faculty Disclosures

  • TARGET AUDIENCE
This activity is intended for medical oncologists, nurses, radiological oncologists and other healthcare providers involved in the treatment of immune thrombocytopenia.

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES

    • Evaluate factors, including age, comorbidities, bleeding history/risk, lifestyle and personal preferences, that influence the decision to initiate active therapy for immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), and counsel patients regarding personalized initial treatment recommendations.
    • Appraise available guidelines concerning the recommended duration of corticosteroid use as initial therapy for ITP, and identify patients with insufficient response or relapse after steroid taper for whom a change of treatment may be warranted.
    • Review the clinical research database supporting the use of thrombopoietin receptor agonists (TPO-RAs) for patients with ITP, and weigh the long-term efficacy and safety data with and practical advantages and disadvantages of the various agents in this class.
    • Recall the published efficacy and safety data with and FDA approved indication for spleen tyrosine kinase inhibition in patients with ITP, and apply this information to the care of appropriately selected individuals.
    • Comprehend the scientific rationale for Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibition as a therapeutic approach for ITP, and appreciate early-phase efficacy and safety findings with and ongoing clinical research studies investigating the use of novel, oral BTK inhibitors in preparation for their potential commercial availability in this disease.
    • Recollect available research and ongoing trials evaluating other novel agents and strategies under investigation for patients with ITP, and counsel appropriately selected individuals about participation in active research protocols.
