CE Information and Faculty Disclosures

  • TARGET AUDIENCE
This activity is intended for medical oncologists, hematologists-oncologists, hematology-oncology fellows and other healthcare providers involved in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES

    • Appreciate how patient age and performance status and disease-related factors affect whether or not to initiate aggressive induction therapy for newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
    • Assess the biologic rationale for the evaluation of Bcl-2 inhibition in AML, and recall published research data with venetoclax in combination with a hypomethylating agent or low-dose cytarabine.
    • Evaluate the recent FDA approval of venetoclax in combination with a hypomethylating agent or low-dose cytarabine for patients with newly diagnosed AML not eligible for intensive therapy, and discern how these regimens can be optimally integrated into nonresearch care algorithms.
    • Recognize the risk of tumor lysis syndrome for patients with AML treated with venetoclax, and implement prophylactic strategies and administration protocols intended to reduce the frequency of this potentially fatal toxicity.
    • Design a plan of care to recognize and manage side effects and toxicities associated with existing and recently approved systemic therapies for patients with AML who are not eligible for induction therapy, in order to support quality of life and continuation of treatment.
