• TARGET AUDIENCE
  This activity is intended for medical oncologists, hematology-oncology fellows and other healthcare providers involved in the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia.
  
  LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Evaluate factors, including age, comorbidities, personal preferences, practical considerations and side-effect profile, in the selection of front-line therapy for patients diagnosed with chronic-phase chronic myeloid leukemia (CP-CML).
  • Assess the scientific rationale for monitoring initial response in patients receiving front-line tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy, and consider the role and timing of early treatment switching when response milestones are not attained.
  • Interrogate available data on the feasibility of first and second TKI discontinuations for patients with a sustained response to treatment, and identify candidates for this approach.
  • Implement a plan of care to recognize and manage class-effect and agent-specific toxicities associated with first- and second-generation TKIs to support quality of life and continuation of treatment.
  • Review the mechanism of action of and published efficacy and safety data with STAMP (specifically targeting the ABL myristoyl pocket) inhibitors for patients with CML, and appreciate the current role of these agents in therapy for relapsed/refractory disease.
  • Consider the biological rationale for and available and emerging research findings with STAMP inhibitors as initial treatment for newly diagnosed CP-CML, and contemplate the potential role of this novel therapeutic strategy.

  Successful completion of these CME activities, which includes participation in the evaluation components and short post-tests, enables the participant to earn up to 2.25 (audio) and 2 (video) Medical Knowledge MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for each activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.
