    This educational activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of medical oncologists, hematology-oncology fellows and other allied cancer professionals.

    OVERVIEW OF ACTIVITY
    Improved understanding of the biologic mechanisms of cancer pathogenesis coupled with the proliferation of next-generation sequencing/multiplex testing and other diagnostic advances has helped identify potentially actionable tumor mutations and predictive biomarkers across virtually every solid-tumor and hematologic neoplasm. Knowledge of specific genomic alterations has become increasingly important in the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of cancer as the clinical benefit of targeted therapies has been demonstrated for multiple tumor types. Although some of these alterations have clearly delineated treatment significance, the interpretation and application of others are major challenges for academic and community-based oncologists and their patients. Given the proliferation of genomic testing and next-generation sequencing in myriad areas of oncology, it is imperative that general oncologists be exposed to resources and perspectives that reinforce the appropriate use of these valuable tools and the interpretation of their results to optimize patient care.

    To that end, this program features a roundtable discussion with leading investigators on the role of genomic testing in guiding treatment for patients with advanced breast, colorectal and prostate cancer. By providing access to the latest scientific developments and the perspectives of experts in the field, this CME activity assists medical oncologists with the formulation of up-to-date management strategies for patients with these cancers.

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES

    • Identify patients with advanced breast, prostate or colorectal cancer who might be appropriate candidates for genomic testing, and coordinate comprehensive biomarker analysis to guide evidence-based care.
    • Describe the potential indications for and clinical utility of multiplex genomic testing in risk stratification and therapeutic decision-making for patients with advanced breast, prostate or colorectal cancer.
    • Consider the presence of potentially targetable genetic abnormalities and predictors of antitumor response to inform the selection of first- and later-line therapy for patients with metastatic breast, prostate or colorectal cancer.
    • Appraise the utility of newer genomic testing modalities, such as liquid biopsy, in clinical decision-making for patients with advanced breast, prostate or colorectal cancer.
    • Appreciate the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration among medical oncologists, pathologists and other healthcare team members to improve the precision and the accurate interpretation of biomarker identification.
